The body is on loan. A collection of molecules jumping through space and time even while the mass of me exists within the same moment. Material archives remain the echoes of our former bodily existence.
I work in the distance between the two. I count what the body does without being asked. Attention attuned to the involuntary and the private. Taking note of the things we are taught to perform as though they were negligible.
My work is to make those observations physical. For a body like mine, time has never been told by the tick of a clock. It is cyclical, bound to blood, to inheritance, and to the slow arithmetic of loss and accumulation.
I am interested in what a culture keeps and what it leaves unmarked. I ask what we carry forward, how we conserve what cannot remain, and what it is to begin again in a language and a place where I remain a constant stranger. My ever rotting flesh vessel on loan.
I choose my materials for how they hold time. The body is the first archive, and the last.
Hala Megahy is a first generation Egyptian American sculptor working primarily in ceramics, glass, and cast metal. She earned her BA from Columbia College Chicago and her MFA in Sculpture from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, by way of Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence and City College of San Francisco, an education spread across four cities and two continents, financed largely on optimism. Her work has been exhibited in Honolulu, including the solo exhibition Echoes Through Time and the group show CCQL: David Salle x UHM. She has received the Geraldine P. Clark Memorial Fellowship for Glass and the Necklace Factory Burning Man Award of Excellence. She co-runs Portfolio, a seasonal floating artist run gallery and residency that sails port to port across the Mediterranean. Ever one to eschew borders and a permanent address, she splits her practice between Oslo, San Francisco, and Hawai’i, and is more recently building a new body of work from a community studio in Mexico. A country she is getting to know one mistake in Spanish at a time.
She is always open to collaborations with other artists.
